Irish American Ceramic artist Mary O’Malley presents Setting at Artlink Fort Dunree, an installation developed in response to the coastal landscape and layered histories of Inishowen. O’Malley draws on diasporic experience to explore how cultural memory travels and transforms across place. Using the imagery of bricks, geology, flora, and fauna the work reflects colonial architecture, the erosion of empire, and the enduring power of nature. Through these layered associations, Setting considers how cultural memory is embedded within objects and landscapes, revealing the shifting relationships between human systems of power and nature’s ability to overshadow human-centred conflict. 

During this two-day class Mary will cover sprig moulding and simple plaster casting techniques, which is what she uses to create the sculpted natural elements in her work. Participants should have experience in ceramics before attending this class.
