THE GLEBE GALLERY/OFFICE OF PUBLIC WORKS PRESENTS
Seán Hillen - Absent Destinations
The Glebe Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of works by Irish artist Seán Hillen. Born in Newry in 1961, Seán is an artist whose work includes collages and the creative use of photographs. He lives and works in Dublin. The documentary TOMORROW IS SATURDAY, currently available on Netflix, is an intimate portrait of Seán’s life and work, and his brilliant, complex, unruly mind.
In his own words:
“I sometimes say, to explain the potential of photo collage: ‘When you take a piece from a photograph, you take a whole world… and then you take another, and you collide them.’
But when you remove part of a world, the gap itself tells other stories.
I always found it difficult to discard the offcuts when I remove a background as so beautiful and meaningful in themselves, and felt there might be a project to use them.
Trying to save another kind of ‘lost world’, I’ve been backing up large amounts of files gathered over years, after a hard-drive failure. Once I dropped the files in the wrong place and the machine responded: ‘Absent Destinations’.
The phrase seemed to fit life today, when uncertainty dominates, and this new series suggested itself.”
