BLUESTACK RECORDS IN ASSOCIATION WITH EARAGAIL ARTS FESTIVAL PRESENTS

Poor Creature: Ruth Clinton, Cormac Mac Diarmada & John Dermody + Carol Anne McGowan

Poor Creature are Cormac Mac Diarmada (Lankum), Ruth Clinton (Landless) and John Dermody (The Jimmy Cake). They take songs of love, loss and the supernatural from Irish and American traditions, reimagining them in new arrangements that are by turns sparse, dreamy, psychedelic and propulsive. An eagerly anticipated debut album, made with producer John ‘Spud’ Murphy is due out in 2025.

“On the live front, the act who have enthralled me for every second of all of the gigs of theirs that I have been lucky enough to witness are Poor Creature . It’s the work of Lankum boy wonder Cormac MacDiarmada and Ruth Clinton from the peerless Landless, so it’s not like they licked it off the stone or anything. The addition of John Dermody on drums has taken the whole project into another dimension and with an album recorded with John ‘Spud’ Murphy at the helm, if I was a betting man, I would put the house I will never own on 2024 being their year” – Donal Dineen

“While taking inspiration from tradition, their approach is experimental, edgy and refreshingly original” – Folk Radio UK

“I have been broadcasting their respective music in bands such as Lankum and Landless for a few years now. It almost goes without saying that their dedication and creativity in traditional music has had a dramatic impact on a generation of listeners in Ireland. In fact, it has impacted every generation who encounters it, the music is timeless and immediate to everyone” – Ray Cuddihy, RTÉ Mise Freisin

Support on the night will come from Donegal native, Carol Anne McGowan, a singer-songwriter and visual artist whose music weaves haunting melodies with poetic lyricism, creating an intimate world of emotion and atmosphere.

Hailing from the remote, windswept landscapes of Donegal, McGowan’s work is deeply rooted in the natural world, often drawing inspiration from its beauty, stillness, and isolation.

With a voice described as both ethereal and earthy, McGowan crafts songs that are spare yet rich with feeling—echoes of traditional Irish folk blend seamlessly with modern minimalist arrangements. Her music, often compared to the likes of Lisa Hannigan and Vashti Bunyan, evokes a timeless quality.
In 2023, McGowan released Aer, an album born during the pandemic lockdowns. This work is a series of vocal experiments using only her layered and treated voice, creating compositions that evoke the sounds of church organs and keyboards.
More recently, McGowan has begun breathing new life into poems from the past, setting the words to music and shaping them into songs that feel both ancient and contemporary.
