Groovy Sunday: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue

When Miles Davis released Kind of Blue in 1959, it marked a legendary moment in jazz history. It transformed the way musicians approached improvisation, shifting from complex chord progressions to a more open, melodic style known as modal jazz. The result was a beautifully flowing, deeply emotional sound that has captivated listeners ever since. It’s soulful, and it has that effortless cool that keeps people coming back decade after decade.

Now, imagine experiencing it live—the entire album, brought to life by six musicians staying true to the original arrangements. With its hypnotic grooves and laid-back swing, Kind of Blue unfolds just as it was meant to be heard. From the iconic opening bass line of So What to the gorgeous, late-night feel of Blue in Green, the deep, bluesy soul of All Blues, and the mesmerising mood of Flamenco Sketches, each piece takes you on a journey through some of the most iconic moments in jazz.

Since September 2024, So Young Yoon has been curating the Jazz Master Album Series, a monthly concert project that brings iconic jazz albums to life. She transcribes and arranges full scores, assembles bands for complete album performances, and performs as the pianist in the ensemble. Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue is among the featured programs. All five concerts to date have been sold out. She has also worked as a session musician, joining Irish singer-songwriter Mik Pyro’s (Republic of Loose) band in 2023, performing at festivals and venues across the country, and appearing on RTÉ’s Tommy Tiernan Show in March 2024.
