Dermot Bolger – The Donegal Connection

Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best known novelists, poets and playwrights, several of whose works have a strong connection to Donegal. His fourteenth publication, An Ark of Light, tells the story of the latter half of the extraordinary life of Donegal woman, Sheila Fitzgerald.

The novel is the sequel to his The Family on Paradise Pier, which explored the true story of the Goold Verschoyle family of Dunkineely, from the serenity of their Donegal childhoods out to the remarkable places their lives took them, from 1930s Moscow and Soviet gulags to the Spanish Civil War.

His most recent plays include Last Orders at the Dockside and Ulysses, both staged by the Abbey Theatre. In this event, Bolger recounts his 30 year friendship with Sheila Fitzgerald and how, after her death, he travelled to Donegal to begin to piece her life together.
